Exercise Bikes for All Fitness Levels:

There are so many exercise bikes available that it’s easy to be overwhelmed.  Spinning bikes, stationary bikes, dual action bikes and recumbent bikes are probably some of the terms you’ve heard of.  Depending on your preferred workout routine, each of these bikes are uniquely built to serve different needs.  To understand the differences, here is a quick overview of these bikes.

Spinning Bikes

You’ve probably heard about the spin craze that has become so popular in health clubs.  Spinning bikes usually have at least a front wheel that spins (which is why they are so brilliantly named spinning bikes). Some features of spinning bikes include reinforced pedals, adjustable seats, water bottle holders and display panels for tracking your distance, pedal strokes and calories burned.

Theses bikes are built with sturdy frames to keep from wobbling, even during vigorously pedaling.  Spin bikes are great for interval training, by combining high and low intensity workouts.

A popular fitness app for spin bikes is the Peloton App. See our list of best spin bikes to use with the Peloton App in > Exercise Bikes

Stationary Bikes

Stationary bikes (or upright bikes) are the exercise bikes that most people can identify.  It’s the same basic model as in the 1980′s.  It provides a low-impact aerobic workout while strengthening your leg and core muscles.  Depending on your preference, an upright bike can be used in both standing or sitting positions.

These bikes save floor space, as most can be folded for easy storage.  Some models like the XTERRA Fitness FB150 folding exercise bike offer a compact design, and a user weight capacity sufficient to hold up to 225 pounds.

Recumbent Bikes

Recumbent bikes are the exercise bikes with the comfortable bucket seats.  You sit back, lower to the ground as you pedal.  These exercise bikes are easy enough for even the most sedentary beginners, and they usually offer workout programs to keep the workouts from becoming mundane.  You can adjust the settings to offer little or no resistance as you pedal.  Most people will definitely find the seat much larger and more comfortable than other exercise bikes.

The programs offered by most recumbent exercise bikes include options suitable for all fitness levels.  You can simulate a course that is easy or difficult, flat or hilly.  When shopping for exercise bikes, it’s better to get a bike with as many variations as possible.

Recumbent bikes also offer one of the few cardio workouts that do not put pressure on your knees and other joints.  Recumbent bikes let your body exercise at an angle where your body weight is not stressing pressure points.  With the positioning of a recumbent bike, you can multi-task to more easily fit in a workout.  You are able to read, catch the news, and even use a phone or your handheld organizer.

Most physicians and personal trainers recommend a recumbent bike, as it is definitely one of the best investments you can make for your health.

Recumbent Exercise Bike with Moving Arms

This stationary recumbent bike offers the added benefit of an upper body workout.  With the built-in full motion arm exercisers, you can get the most out of your indoor cardio workout.
What to look for in a recumbent bike with moving arms:
Features include adjustable seating, device holder and an easy to read digital monitor measuring your speed, distance, time, calories and pulse heart-rate.  Adjust the intensity of your workout with 8-levels of magnetic resistance. [Best recumbent bike with arm workout]
